Baldness has been linked to many myths surrounding intelligence, virility, ethnicity, career, social class, wealth and virility. Some of the myths may have some truth.
· The first myth is: “you inherit baldness from your mother’s father.” The gene associated to baldness comes from the X chromosome and is linked to the mother’s side
· "Intellectual activity or psychological problems can cause baldness." Due to the fact that many people go bald as they age, having a higher intellectual activity and more complex psychological make-up could be linked to baldness
· The idea that those who are bald are not as attractive or appealing is often played out as a stereotype in films. A writer and actor such as Woody Allen is a good example of this. This stereotype is a controversial one
· "Your ethnicity can increase the chances of going bald." Studies have shown that men who are Greek or Macedonian do have a greater chance of going bald
· "Baldness can be caused by emotional stress, sexual frustration etc." Emotional stress has been shown to speed up the balding process
· On the other hand though, sleep deprivation and stress, lowered testosterone levels in military recruits, however did not affect their susceptibility to going bald
· "Bald men are more 'virile' or sexually active than others." There is no scientific evidence to prove this
· "Standing on your head alleviates baldness" There is no scientific evidence of this
· "Tight hats cause baldness." This may be a myth, however hats can cause hair breakage and split ends
